Writing and reading process...

At the very begining of this course I wondered what  I have really achieved in previous courses in order to excel in this one. Well, the questions is still on and on every time I face a text.  I suppose we have confront ourselves with several texts, we have discussed enough on typologies and the fact that we have to deal with all of them.  However, the outer view of text is just the begining.  I think I've spent too much time classifying text and looking for examples but I'm still way too far from a deeper understanding.

As to my process I strongly believe I'm able to identify information, literal information, the main elements, characteristicas of form.  Furthermore, I'm able to make a decent summary and throw a prudent review.  Nevertheless, in this course I expect to awake my sensibility and reach a more complex level.

To be continued...

Getting deeper in writing

The last few weeks in the course I've found that the topics we are covering are not that different from those who we covered in the past (regarding writing theory) but these topics are being explored in a deeper way.  I remember, about a year ago,  we discussed definition and description at an "beginners" level.  By that time, I wasn't aware of the importance and the difficulty of this exercise. Now I see that a good definition can give an enormous value to a text and lead to a well-built thesis.
A weak definition, on the other hand, can make a text very confusing and boring.  Moreover, a lame or simple definition can get the reader in a difficult situation in which it's not clear what are we reading about and in the worst scenario will throws us to go around the bushes.

Improving reading skills

Reading as a technical exercise is a very demanding task.  I have noticed that the strategies to face a text are diverse depending on the text typology we are using.  I used to assume any kind of text with the same scope or strategie, the only thing that changed was the purpose.

However, now I am fully aware that comprehension and visualization of every text typology particular characteristics makes this process more efficcient and productive. In fact, the deeper I go into the text, -it means to peruse every paragraph- more evident the intentions seems to be.

In this course I have achieved a new concept of reading that goes further than merely scratch the surface by looking for terms or grammar structures.  This new approach involves a complex exercise in order to understand the text as a whole, identifying not only its structure but also the essence of the document.

  1. Great, Hector. When i read your first reflection I felt worried thinking if this course would really meet your expectations. I was also worried about the fact that the first sessions had been a bit too theoretical. Apparently, and from your second and third reflection, it seems the course did meet your expectations.
